Liverpool's 2025-26 summer transfer window was close to perfect.
The Reds spent an awful lot of money on improving their ranks, but in the end, their deal for Marc Guehi fell at the last hurdle.
The Englishman had undergone his medical for his Anfield switch with a five-year deal even being agreed upon.
And, even though a deal sheet was submitted to give both Crystal Palace and Liverpool time to get a deal finalised, in the end, it never came to fruition.
The working theory behind why the deal for Guehi was stopped is that Palace didn't manage to get a replacement lined up after Igor Julio's move fell through.
He was supposed to be making a season-long loan move to Selhurst Park, but in the end, he opted against joining Oliver Glasner's men.
And now, as per a report from talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, it's been revealed what Glasner may have threatened to do if his captain was sold this summer.
"As reported on talkSPORT don't underestimate the part Oliver Glasner played in persuading Steve Parish to halt the deal," he wrote via his personal X account.
"Sources suggest there were fears the manager would quit if he lost his captain with no replacement signed."
Although the addition of Guehi would have been nice due to the poor form Ibrahima Konate has been in, the Reds still have four senior centre-backs to choose from.
Indeed, this does mean that the likes of Joe Gomez will have to try and stay fit for more than five games in a row, but if he can manage to do that, Slot's men should be fine.
And, while Konate's first few performances in the 2024-25 season may not have been the best, he did play at a higher level when Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 on Sunday.
Of course, there are still question marks about where his future lies due to his contract expiring at the end of the 2025-26 season, with nobody knowing how things are going to pan out.
At the moment, the main thing for Liverpool to focus on is creating chemistry among their ranks and ensuring their new arrivals fit in well.
Here's hoping that the Reds missing out on Guehi this summer doesn't come back to bite them this term.
