New research suggests that the cost of health checks, healthy foods, and gym memberships are among the barriers in preventing women protecting their heart health.
The research by IPSOS for the Irish Heart Foundation also found that only 51% of men and women felt confident they would know the signs and symptoms of heart disease and stroke in women.
This is despite the fact that women are six times more likely to die from heart disease or stroke than from breast cancer.
The Irish Heart Foundation is re-running its 'Her Heart Matters' campaign to try to increase awareness around heart health for women.
The charity has expressed concerns about the reasons women do not prioritise their heart health.
Some 25% of women said worries about the cost of health checks were a key factor in not protecting their heart health.
Nearly one-in-four said they did not feel motivated to look after their heart health, 21% said gym memberships are too expensive and 18% identified the high cost of healthy foods.
Director of Health Promotion at the IHF Janis Morrissey said that symptoms of heart attack in women can be quite different to symptoms that many associate with a heart attack.
Speaking on RTÉ's Morning Ireland, she said that symptoms such as extreme fatigue, back pain and jaw pain are often seen in women who are experiencing a heart attack and should not be ignored.
She advised any woman that have concerns to attend a hospital without delay.
"Our message is if you know your own body, if you feel that something is very unusual and not right for you, contact the emergency services and go and get checked out."
Ms Morrissey urged women to "take stock of their health" and said they should "know their numbers" and be aware of what their cholesterol level and their blood pressure is.
She called for all women to be given access to a free annual health assessment regardless of whether they have access to a medical card or a GP card.
"All women should be empowered with the information around their own heart health," she added.
