FARMINGTON HILLS, Mich. - A stretch of Middlebelt Road in Oakland County remains closed early Tuesday morning following a chemical spill.
A hazmat team responded to an acid leak from a tractor-trailer Monday evening, which shut down the Livonia/Farmington Hills border.
It happened on May 19 at around 5 p.m., and the Farmington Hills Fire Department responded to the tractor-trailer leaking ferric chloride onto the road.
Since the tractor-trailer leaking the acid stopped on Middlebelt Road just south of 8 Mile Road, the Livonia Fire and Rescue Department responded and took command of the incident.
Due to the nature of this hazard, the Western Wayne Hazardous Materials Response Team was activated.
The hazmat technicians on this team are firefighters from the surrounding area, including Farmington Hills.
They wore specialized level A hazmat suits to enter the semi-trailer and stop the leak.
The road remains closed as the trucking company's cleanup crew works to make it safe for the public. The cleanup effort is expected to take hours.
