Cricket season ends with 'soggy' final day

The Bond Timber Cornwall Cricket League came to a soggy conclusion on Saturday after one of the driest seasons in recent years.

An Atlantic weather front made landfall in the west at breakfast time, and by mid-morning, the whole county was affected with five hours or more of continuous rain.

Of the 70 games scheduled, only two, at Bude and St Minver on the North Cornwall coast, were able to play reduced games in Division Two East.

St Blazey began the day tied on points with Luckett but behind on the head-to-heads.

Once their 26-over game began at Bude, Luckett had no option but a 20-over game at St Minver, who desperately needed survival points themselves.

With St Blazey winning by ten runs and Luckett losing by 51 runs, St Blazey are set to return to the County Divisions, 24 years after being relegated.

In the Premier Division, Penzance were confirmed as County Champions for a record 27th time, and the fifth in the last six seasons.

The trophy was handed over on a bright late summer evening at St Clare.

They had spent the day at Penwith rivals St Just, needing a maximum of seven points to retain the title.

With the home side tied on points at the bottom with Truro, every opportunity was given to get play underway by the 4pm deadline.

However, the title was decided just before three o'clock with the confirmation that Wadebridge, who started the day 13 points behind, had been called off at Werrington.

Truro were desperate to play against Grampound Road, for obvious reasons, but with rain still falling in the city right up to the 4pm deadline, it was not to be.

Once that was called off, the St Just v Penzance game followed, much to the relief of those in the far west.

Elsewhere, Helston's trip to Callington was aborted and they finished a creditable third in the table.

St Austell travelled to Redruth, but again, no play was possible.

Standings (18/18): Penzance 272, Wadebridge 259, Helston 230, St Austell 220, Redruth 207, Werrington 202, Callington 191, Grampound Road 184, St Just 174, Truro 174.

It was a bit simpler in County Division One as the title was confirmed at 10 am, the moment second-placed Beacon's visit to Paul was cancelled.

Camborne had begun the day only needing six points.

Their home game with Perranporth was also called off, and a late afternoon presentation ceremony followed at Roskear.

Falmouth were not safe going into the final day but got the five points they needed when the game at Newquay was cancelled at 9.30am.

It had been due to start earlier at 11.30am.

Not only did it ensure Falmouth's survival, but it also confirmed that it will be 2 up and 2 down across all the lower divisions as an East and a West team are coming down from County One.

With St Erme destined to finish bottom, it was left to see if St Austell Seconds could overtake Roche to get out of the drop zone.

Once the game at Wheal Eliza against Hayle was off, inevitably, Roche against St Erme followed suit.

Standings (18/18): Camborne 286 pts, Beacon 272, Hayle 264, Perranporth 208, Paul 197, Newquay 182, Falmouth 171, Roche 161, St Austell II 156, St Erme 135.

In Division Two West, Stithians won by 32 points from Mullion, having only lost twice, with St Ives three points back.

Wendron and Helston Seconds occupy the relegation spots.

Ludgvan took maximum points from four of their last five games to win Division Three by 12 points from Redruth Seconds, with Truro Seconds, having lost their last three games, third.

Barripper and Hayle Seconds ended at the foot.

Falmouth Seconds' defeat at Rosudgeon in early August decided the Division Four title with a margin of five points.

Troon headed Truro Thirds by 41 points in Division Five.

Ludgvan Seconds won Division Six from Stithians Seconds by seven points.

St Just Fourths suffered just one defeat in Division Seven West, while in the Central Section Perranporth Thirds bettered Truro Fourths by five points after their final day shoot-out fell to the weather.

The East v West County Finals on Saturday are being hosted by Lanhydrock, St Stephen, Mount Hawke & Porthtowan, St Minver, Constantine and St Gluvias.
