The Calumet Heritage Partnership has been working for years to promote the bistate Calumet Region and get it declared a National Heritage Area that would elevate its statute, boost marketing and draw more visitors.

The nonprofit group will discuss Region tourist at the upcoming 25th annual Calumet Heritage Conference.

The Calumet Heritage Partnership and Decay Devils will host the day-long conference at 9 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5 at the Indiana Welcome Center at 7770 Corrine Drive just off the Kennedy Avenue exit of Interstate 80/94 in Hammond. It will include a downtown Gary walking tour in the afternoon.

"As a local preservation organization, Decay Devils collaborates with CHP year-round on events and efforts to showcase the Calumet Region's historic, architectural, and natural assets, in addition to their own mission to reactivate abandoned places and unify communities. We're thrilled to collaborate with them this year to present A Region's Welcome: Cultural Heritage Tourism in the Calumet," the Calumet Heritage Partnership said in a press release. "Our theme explores two different types of welcome: that of a stranger coming to the Region for the first time, and of residents who deserve to feel welcome in their homes and communities. Both affect the region's economy and community well-being, as visitors near and far absorb the Calumet's unique sense of place."

"I'm on the Calumet Heritage Partnership board. Even though it's a different group, it's a very, very similar organization," he said. "Our conferences are almost identical with different speakers on the same topics so we're holding them jointly. They'll discuss how to fight blight in urban space, how to get people engages, those topics and more."

Speakers will include Calumet Heritage Partnership President Gary Johnson and National Trust for Historic Preservation Senior Director for Preservation Tiffany Tolbert.

Elizabeth Blasius with Preservation Futures, Mary Lou Seidel with HW Consulting and Sam Love with Indiana Humanities will have a panel discussion about Tactical Urbanism & Preservation Action.

South Shore Convention and Visitors Bureau President and CEO Phil Taillon, Indiana Dunes Tourism President and CEO Christine Livingston, NIRPC President and CEO Ty Warner and Purdue Northwest Professor of Tourism and Hospitality Matthew Bauman will discuss Traveling Within: Heritage Tourism in the Calumet Region.

"Join residents of the Region and representatives from local organizations and government agencies to discuss how tourism development informed by cultural and natural heritage can create responsible visitation that is both sustainable for local economies and inclusive of local communities," the Calumet Heritage Partnership said in a press release. "We hope the conference sessions spark ideas, relationships, and long-lasting projects to improve how we as a region respectfully embrace our cultural heritage and by extension how we responsibly guide our guests around the places we call home."
