Following the unexpected departure of their longtime drummer, Tim "Herb" Alexander, Primus has been on the hunt for a brand new drummer. Upon the news, Primus and their lead singer, Les Claypool, wrote in an X post, "It came as a complete shock to all of us here in the Primus camp" and "On the heels of a wonderful spring & summer of touring and some fabulous plans ahead, it has been a bit bewildering for us that Herb would so abruptly opt out."
The post concluded with, "After several attempts to communicate with Herb, his only response was another email stating that he has 'lost his passion for playing'" and "As disappointing as that is, we respect his choice." With all that in mind, Primus announced an international search, writing on a social media post, "We are currently taking submissions from all points in the universe for the position of Primus drummer/percussionist." "Seeking a well-mannered, affable individual with original sensibility and aesthetic, possessing a desire to open new doors in the creative world," the post added.
That being the case, it seems the one and only Billy Strings wanted to toss his name into the ring. And he did exactly that by sending the band an audition tape of himself playing the drums.
In a video shared by Les Claypool, Strings trades in his guitar for a drum kit and gives it his best go. Of course, this a humorous attempt by Strings and one that also shows his admiration for the band. In the video, Strings utters,"Hey, here is my audition to play for Primus" and then breaks out into his drum solo. If you're a purist when it comes to the drums, maybe don't give this a listen. If you do, make sure you have your volume turned down.
Claypool responded to Strings' attempt by simply writing, "We may have found our guy..." Needless to say, don't expect Billy Strings to trade in his guitar for a drum kit anytime soon. But, all in all, the moment marked another fun and candid moment from these larger-than-life figures.
