Electronics manufacturing in India has expanded sixfold and exports have jumped nearly eight times in the last 11 years under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Make in India programme, Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.
He was speaking at the inauguration of the country's first mobile phone tempered glass manufacturing facility at Optiemus Infracom Limited in Noida.
The minister said that the milestone marks a significant step forward in India's drive to build a robust domestic electronics ecosystem.
"Be it mobiles, laptops, servers, routers, or other hardware components, manufacturing of all these has begun in India. Today, even the tempered glass used in mobile phones will be produced domestically. Until now, it was imported," he noted.
Calling the new unit a breakthrough in India's self-reliance push, Vaishnaw added, "This is a big step in strengthening the electronics manufacturing ecosystem. I have always maintained that all components used in mobiles, including glass, must be made in India".
"By the end of this year, mobile cover glasses using Corning technology will begin production in the country. Our target is to ensure that every component in electronics manufacturing is built in India," he further noted.
The Noida facility is projected to manufacture around 2.5 crore tempered glass units annually, cutting import dependence and strengthening India's value chain in electronics.
The minister also stressed the industry's growing role in employment generation, noting that electronics manufacturing currently provides jobs to nearly 2.5 million people across the country.
"Step by step, value addition is increasing in India and an electronics manufacturing ecosystem is being built," Vaishnaw added.
