Born in Faison, North Carolina, to Bessie Bell and Stacy Bryant Jackson, she was the youngest of five siblings and the last surviving member of her family. Vern married William H. Lovelady on November 19, 1949, the love of her life until his passing from cancer on April 2, 2002. Together, they shared a deep bond and a creative spirit.

Known for her energy, creativity, and love for her family and dogs, Vern lived a life of purpose and passion. She was a gifted artist, finding joy in charcoal sketches and painting.
