Homefields Care Farm is set to launch its 26th growing season on May 30, 2025. This milestone underscores its enduring commitment to providing meaningful work and community engagement for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Established in the early 1990s, Homefields began by addressing a critical gap in services for adults with disabilities. As Board President Allison Hawthorne recalls, "Homefields started because of a gap in services many years ago... from that gap, that's how we grew Homefields." The organization initially focused on residential opportunities, opening two homes before expanding into agriculture.
Today, Homefields operates a 19-acre organic community-supported agriculture (CSA) program, offering over 200 varieties of crops, including traditional vegetables and unique offerings like pawpaws and mizuna. Farm Manager Tony Beers highlights the farm's diversity: "We have over 200 kinds of plants on our farm... even as a farm, we're kind of unique in that we have a high diversity of things that we are cultivating."
Beyond agriculture, Homefields serves as a vocational training ground. Their pass-through program collaborates with local high schools, providing students with disabilities hands-on experience in farming practices, from seeding to harvesting. Beers emphasizes the inclusive nature of the farm: "On any given day, you can find people of all abilities working together for farm goals."
The farm's impact is evident in stories like that of a young man who, initially reserved, found confidence through guiding a CSA member to the pick-your-own fields. Hawthorne reflects, "In that moment, that's where the fruition and the motivation is in the work."
