What are the current road conditions in Hampden County?

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Communities are waking up to the snowfall that is still coming down in many areas of western Massachusetts Thursday morning.

In Springfield, the snow is still coming down in larger flakes than earlier Thursday morning. The roads are still slushy and slick, so plows are starting to make their way through the city. A snow plow driver shortage is expected again this winter due to increased insurance premiums for larger trucks and the lack of snow we saw last year.

Around one in four weather-related accidents each year are caused by snow or ice. Even the slightest amount of snow can double the distance it takes to come to a stop.

When you're out on Thursday, remember to keep your distance from any cars around you, and if you need to slow down, tap the peddle to warn drivers behind you that you're changing your speed. You can also always put on your hazards, and drive slowly in the right lane, but never slam on your brakes. If you're stopping at a light and skid, AAA recommends looking and steering where you want to go.
