WOONSOCKET, R.I. (WLNE)- Three families are without a home after flames engulfed their house in Woonsocket on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters say that they were called to Park Ave. shortly after 1 p.m. for a fire that sent flames shooting into the sky.
According to fire officials, ten people lived in the multi-family home.
Everyone made it out safely, but several pets were unaccounted for.
"I tried to go [back into the house] and grab the other cats, but the house was filling up with so much smoke... I started to cough," resident Mariah Dubois said.
Crews had their hands full making sure the fire didn't spread, as several houses were close by.
Gusty conditions fueled the flames as well, with Woonsocket Deputy Fire Chief Robert Sevigny saying that they posed a significant challenge in putting out the flames.
Sevigny said that the fire was put out in around half an hour.
Though the flames are now gone, a look at the aftermath offered little reassurance to the families who lived there.
"I know it's going to be really rough for now, so I'm going to do everything I can, and I'm hoping that the family we do have comes and helps," Dubois said.
The state fire marshal has been called in to investigate how the fire started, and the Red Cross is helping the ten people who lived in the home.
