"I am extraordinarily pleased and excited to tell you about the [Healio Rheumatology cover story] on Lyme arthritis that we have this month," Calabrese said. "It is contributed to and led by none other than Allen Steere, MD, who owns this field because of his massive contributions.
"We have some other great discussants to talk about how Lyme arthritis is still underrecognized, how the infection with Lyme -- Borrelia -- is spread across the country and becoming endemic in new places, like Ohio, where we've never had it, and just touching base with some of the controversies regarding post-Lyme syndrome," he added. "And I talk about it in my editorial."
Calabrese additionally discussed the American College of Rheumatology releasing the first update to its systemic lupus erythematosus treatment guidelines since 1999. The latest guidelines for SLE provide a strong recommendation for treatment with hydroxychloroquine in all cases.
"The other big story in rheumatology is lupus, lupus, lupus," Calabrese said. "After 2 decades, the ACR has updated their guidelines, and Lisa Sammaritano, MD, has some nice summaries of this. It's overdue, with so much to talk about."
