Culver City High School varsity football opens season against King Drew

Centaur junior quarterback Nicholas Hoang will the Centaur offense in 2025.

It's time for Culver City High School varsity football. Fall is fast approaching, and footballs are flying in the air and that means the football season is here for the Centaurs. Their first game of the 2025 season kicks off against Los Angeles City Section King/Drew on Thursday, August 28, at Southwest Community College at 7 p.m.

Culver City was 8-4 last season while King/Drew was11-4. The Golden Eagles won the City Section Division I title by defeating Palisades. "King Drew is coming off of a historic season," said Culver City head coach Jahmal Wright after practice this week. "They made it to the state regionals last year and they won their first game of the season this year against Los Aneles Jordan so they will be coming in with a lot of confidence,"

Wright is looking forward to the opening game. "We are excited to get the season started. It's a new year with new players." Now new players will have to step up and make plays if the Centaurs expect to be successful this year. The main player that will have to make plays is new quarterback Nicholas Hoang. The junior left-handed signal caller has looked good in the summer passing league tournaments and he is hoping to continue his top level of play when the regular season starts this week.

Wright has a lot of confidence in his offense and defense. "I expect us to execute on offense and let the game come to us. We need to take it one game at a time. The offensive unit is coming together at the right time. Our defense will be led by our linebackers. We will be playing a physical brand of football on defense."

The special team kicking game is in good hands and feet with returning players Hudson King and Daniel Perez. "We are excited about our kicking game," said Wright. "We have a lot of experience in our kicking game, and we will be leaning on their experience and leadership."

Long time assistant and former Centaur head coach Cornell Myles has a good feeling about the 2025 Centaurs. "I am feeling really good about this team. We are ready, getting ready and being ready to go out there and win the game. This team is ready to compete. It's the beginning of a process.

"We have gone through a lot of practices to get ready for the season," said Myles. "We told our players this summer to keep pushing through the pain of working hard."

Culver City played a practice game against Redondo last week and according to Myles the Centaur defense stepped up a made some big plays. "The defense created five turnovers so now we as coaches need to put our players in position to be successful in the first game of the season against King/Drew."

Culver City's next game is also on the road against Harbor City Narbonne on Friday, September 5, at 7 p.m. Their first home game is on Friday, September 12, at 7 p.m.
