Devon and Cornwall set for 'unsettled' September as Met Office gives 'Indian summer' verdict | Devon Live

The UK is set to experience thunderstorms, hail and heavy showers before temperatures could become warmer than average towards the end of September.

As summer draws to a close on September 22, bringing an end to what is set to be the hottest summer on record according to the Met Office, many will be looking ahead to autumn and what September will bring.

The first week of September will be unsettled for Devon and Cornwall.

There have been whispers of a so-called Indian Summer, with reports that the temperature could hit 30C in the UK early in September.

However, according to the Met Office, we should expect more moderate conditions this month.

The Met Office said that weather conditions will contain a mix of rain, heavy at times, but with sunny spells interspersed.

Today's weather forecast: "Showers easing overnight with clear spells developing across the region. Cloud then thickens from the west with persistent heavy rain moving into Cornwall by dawn where it turns windier. Minimum temperature 14 °C."

Tomorrow's forecast predicts warmer temperatures, as the forecast said: "Band of heavy rain will continue to move eastwards across the region through the morning. By the afternoon rain clears with the odd shower behind along with some sunny spells. Maximum temperature 20 °C."

Further ahead this week, the Met Office said: "Remaining unsettled throughout with further spells of rain and showers. The rain will be heavy at times, but some drier and sunnier interludes will develop. Temperatures around average."

The rest of the month will follow the trend of the first week by remaining unsettled with some thunderstorms and hail across the UK.

The second half of the month will be slightly drier with some warmer temperatures towards the end of September.

Earlier forecasts had predicted a possible 'Indian summer' in the UK with high temperatures, but so far this seems unlikely.

The Met Office said: "Changeable weather conditions are expected across the UK during this period with low pressure systems tending to dominate the overall pattern. This will mean showers or longer spells of rain will affect much of the UK at times.

"Some heavy rain or showers are expected in places, most often in the west. Thunderstorms and hail are also possible, as are some spells of strong winds if any deep areas of low pressure form in the vicinity of the UK.

"Some short-lived spells of drier and more settled weather are also possible at times, especially early and again late in the period, when they may last a little longer.

Temperatures will likely be close to average or slightly below overall, but may rise above at times in any drier, sunnier spells.

"Low pressure is likely to dominate much of this period [second half of September], bringing changeable weather conditions with showers or some longer spells of rain at times. There will likely be some drier, more settled interludes, particularly at the start of the period.

"Temperatures are likely to be close to average, perhaps turning warmer than average later in the period."
