UCA punches postseason ticket
The University of Central Arkansas defeated Eastern Kentucky in four sets Sunday afternoon in Fort Myers, Fla., to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament as the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament champion.
It is the first ASUN championship for the program. This will be its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance and the first under Coach John Newberry.
"The level of play from all of the teams that are here has been insane," Newberry said. "We knew we had a chance from the beginning of conference (play). ... Couldn't be any more proud of these girls. The fact that we're going to be dancing in December has a nice little ring to it, we're excited."
Laci Bohannan led the way with 24 kills on .426 hitting. Caylan Koons reached the 4,000 career assists mark with 49 Sunday, adding nine digs.
Alexis McDaniel led UCA's defensive effort with 17 digs.
Bohannan was named the ASUN Tournament MVP, while Koons and McDaniel joined her on the all-tournament team.
The Sugar Bears won the first two sets (25-21, 25-18), dropped the third set (21-25) and won the fourth and final set (25-21) to defeat the Colonels.
"They made some adjustments in that third set that we lost," Newberry said. "And then we were able to re-adjust. I got to give it to my girls, it's a resiliency on their part to adjust to that. That's hard to do."
The Sugar Bears entered the tournament as the fourth seed with a 12-4 conference record. UCA beat Lipscomb (3-0) and North Florida (3-1) on Thursday and Friday, respectively, to advance to Sunday's final.
The NCAA Women's Volleyball Championship selection show will take place on Nov. 30, when UCA will learn its seeding. The tournament will begin on Dec. 4 at non-predetermined campus sites.

Payton Van Veen and Addison Collum tied with a team-high with 14 kills for Arkansas State (22-8). That duo, along with tournament Most Outstanding Player Daedrianna Cail, was named to the all-tournament team. Cail finished with six kills in the title clincher, while Erin Madigan put up 26 assists and 14 digs. Kaitlin Whitlock tallied a team-high 15 digs and 11 kills.
