COLUMBUS, Ga. (WTVM) - Planning ahead doesn't just pertain to Christmas gifts. It can also be a key factor in keeping you from getting sick.
With holiday travel underway, taking extra precaution can go a long way.
If you're planning on traveling for the holidays, you likely have enough on your plate. But something as small as packing smart and staying healthy could be what keeps your plans on track.
When hitting the roads or skies this weekend and into next week, be sure to pack a health kit. From bandaids to prescriptions, hand warmers or even sunscreen, it's better to stay over prepared than under prepared.
"If you are traveling, try to start taking vitamin C as a supplement, zinc, elderberry if you can get ahold of it, and one other thing which I really believe in and it's called Xyzal, and drink a lot of water," said Dr. Shikha Shah with Prestige Family Medicine in Columbus.
Dr. Shah also emphasized vaccines. She advises getting any needed boosters for the flu and COVID-19, ensuring both you and your family's shots are up to date.
"If you come across somebody who is sick, make sure to mask. If they're going to meet their grandkids, they should take their RSV shot. If you're traveling with little kids, get your vaccinations; flu vaccine is very very important right now," Shah said.
This time of year consists of good food, but not always healthy food. While it's great to enjoy those holiday meals, it's always best to have a balance of moderation.
"Try as much as you can to focus on eating fresh vegetables, but more importantly vitamin C like oranges or berries and stuff like that," Shah said.
While it's important to take precautions traveling on the roads, your physical and mental health directly affect your alertness, judgment, and reaction time.
