A Johor Bahru onigiri shop has spoken out after a video showing a customer mistreating staff during a rainy day went viral online

The incident prompted AKI Onigiri to issue statements on Facebook, explaining what happened and urging greater respect for service workers.

According to the shop, the incident occurred during heavy rain when the store was busy. A young male staff member ran outside to offer an umbrella to a female customer who was in a white SUV. Footage later circulating online shows the customer throwing the umbrella onto the wet pavement instead of returning it properly.

The same video also shows the woman gesturing angrily at staff inside the shop. Despite this, the staff member bows politely after the umbrella is returned.

In one of the statements, AKI Onigiri outlined its brand values, saying courtesy towards customers is a core principle and every greeting or expression of thanks is sincere. The shop added that it only asks for "the most basic thing" in return: mutual respect.

"In exchange for our dedication, we only ask for the most basic thing: mutual respect. May the kindness we share be cherished by one another," the shop wrote.

In the post, the shop said that while actions such as throwing an umbrella, which scratched a colleague's car, may seem minor, they can be deeply hurtful to staff who are working hard

The shop said it would continue treating customers politely, not because it is owed, but because it chooses to uphold its principles.

"We treat people with courtesy because that is our principle. But when our sincerity is trampled upon, it is hard not to ask: Can we really continue to be polite? The answer is, Yes. We will continue. Not because the other person deserves it, but because we choose to be better people."

The shop blurred the customer's face and the vehicle number plate before uploading the video of the incident.

The posts drew widespread attention, with many social media users expressing support for the shop and outrage at the customer's behaviour

One commenter wrote that the customer showed "no upbringing", adding that the shop had "no obligation to help an able-bodied person shelter from the rain".

"Who do you think you are? And you still have the nerve to scold people? You used the shop's umbrella without even saying 'thank you' and then just threw it away, truly lacking in manners."

Another commenter questioned what she described as a sense of entitlement, referencing the customer's vehicle seen in the video.

"Think driving a Merc makes you a big deal? Big enough that the whole world has to revolve around her and serve her??" she wrote, using a Chinese idiom to suggest that bad behaviour exists everywhere.

Others echoed similar sentiments, with several pointing out that the customer was driving a luxury SUV yet appeared unprepared for the rain.

Some questioned why the customer's face and licence plate were blurred, while others made sarcastic remarks about the expectation of being personally assisted with an umbrella.

In the post, the owner also clarified that the shop had been busy due to the rain and acknowledged that communication on the day might not have been perfect

The owner stressed that the staff's assistance was voluntary and should not be taken for granted, adding, "As the owner, I also need to protect my employees.

He said the shop would review its communication to prevent similar misunderstandings and expressed hope that the conversation could return to a more rational and kind tone.
