People in New York City call the Ghostbusters when something strange is in their neighborhood... or Blue Bloods' NYPD officer Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg). In Boston, on the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, they'll be calling the newly joined Boston Police Officer Danny Reagan and members of the Silver family, a prominent law enforcement family. Ernie Hudson, who played Winston Zeddemore in the Ghostbusters franchise, has joined the cast of the spinoff as the Silver family patriarch and a man of the cloth. And while ghosts won't be the culprits running around Beantown, a familiar face used to hunting them will play a new character in the upcoming police procedural.
According to Deadline, Hudson will play Reverend Peters, a renowned pastor of a historic Baptist church in Boston. Reverend Peters is the Silver family patriarch, who is open-minded and welcoming. He's also the father of Mae Silver, Boston's District Attorney, and the grandfather of Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), Superintendent Ashley Silver, and rookie patrol cop Isaac Silver. Detective Lena Silver will be paired up with Wahlberg's Danny Reagan. Hudson was tapped as a series regular as Boston Blue will debut on CBS this fall in Blue Bloods' time slot.

So far, only Martin-Green and Hudson have been added to the series' cast, which is also executive produced by Wahlberg. More cast members should be announced soon, however. Boston Blue is produced by CBS Studios in association with Jerry Bruckheimer, with Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis serving as the showrunners. Ernie Hudson has reprised his role as Winston throughout the Ghostbusters franchise, and although it's a fan-favorite role of his, he's been working consistently outside of bustin' ghosts. In fact, Reverend Peters isn't his only upcoming role -- Hudson has a part in Toy Story 5 (2026), too, voicing Combat Carl.
News of the spinoff is music to Blue Bloods lovers' ears no doubt, as the series ended in 2024 after 14 seasons. Over the course of 293 episodes, viewers fell in love with the Reagan family: Detective Danny Reagan, ADA Erin Reagan, Sergeant Jamie Reagan, Henry, Frank, Jackie Curatola, and more. The family dedicated their entire lives to law enforcement and therefore became a powerful force in New York. Blue Blood remained a hit until it ended, and Donnie Wahlberg said he and the cast did everything they could to save the show. While making a recent appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show, the actor referred to the series as "the greatest blessing" and got a bit emotional.
Ernie Hudson Was Once On An Episode Of 'Blue Bloods'
Before the world found out that Hudson would be a part of the spinoff series, he appeared in an episode of the original series as a one-off character. In the episode "School of Hard Knocks," Hudson portrayed Principal Darryl Ward. During the episode, Danny and Baez attempt to get a grasp on an incident that happened at Ward's school (one of the students is shot by a rival gang member in the school's courtyard). A lot happens, as a teacher is also injured in a separate incident, and Ward begins to blame himself for not protecting his staff and students. The episode garnered 9.32 million viewers.
