SpaceX sends communications satellite system into orbit

Dec. 17 (UPI) -- SpaceX saw a successful launch Tuesday of its SES O3b mPower mission.

The liftoff to medium Earth orbit took place as planned at about 5 p.m. ET at Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

A live webcast began minutes prior to the scheduled liftoff. It initially had a one-hour and 27-minute launch window scheduled with a Wednesday backup opportunity at the same time.

Tuesday's launch represented the first flight for the first-stage booster supporting this particular space mission which, according to SpaceX officials, was a communications satellite system.

The booster separation went as planned. It likewise represented the 385th touchdown of an orbital class rocket, officials said.

The booster touched down at 5:35 p.m. on the drone ship "Just Read the Instructions" stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.
